At Aubrick, we understand Life Competencies as a set of essential skills that help students learn, make decisions, build relationships and participate in a constantly changing world.

These competencies are developed throughout the school experience and are embedded in learning across the Brazilian and Cambridge curricula. This approach is aligned with the International Schools Partnership (ISP) mission of developing curious, confident minds for a relationship with the world.

The Aubrick approach

The future requires knowledge, but it also requires people who are prepared to keep learning, make thoughtful choices and adapt to new situations.

That is why Life Competencies are part of students’ development at every stage of Aubrick. Over the years, students build their ability to understand themselves, care for their wellbeing, develop relationships, think critically, communicate ideas, collaborate, make decisions and act responsibly.

Each stage adds new dimensions to this development, connecting what students learn at school with the situations they encounter in and beyond the classroom.

Early Childhood

In Early Childhood, children begin to build the foundations for understanding themselves, recognising emotions, forming relationships and becoming aware of their place within a group.

Life Competencies develop through everyday experiences. Through play, interaction and shared routines, children learn to listen, wait, share, communicate their feelings, resolve small conflicts and care for themselves, others and their environment.

Independence, empathy, communication, cooperation, creativity and responsibility develop alongside their learning experiences.

These early foundations support the learning and development that follow in the years ahead.

Primary School

In Primary School, students broaden their understanding of themselves, others and the world around them. Competencies developed in Early Childhood are applied to increasingly complex situations.

Managing their time, taking responsibility, working as a team, presenting ideas, listening to different perspectives, dealing with challenges and finding solutions are all developed alongside the curriculum.

Gradually, students begin to understand that their attitudes and decisions affect the groups and communities they are part of.

Secondary School

In Secondary School, students experience significant personal, social and intellectual changes. As their knowledge grows, they develop greater independence in interpreting the world and forming their own perspectives.

Knowledge from different subject areas is used to analyse situations, question information, understand problems and reflect on social, cultural, scientific, environmental and technological issues.

Life Competencies connect this learning to the way students participate in society, helping them develop their values, identity, sense of responsibility and ability to engage in dialogue.

High School

In High School, Life Competencies take on an even broader dimension. Students begin making decisions that can shape different areas of their lives and need to be prepared to navigate choices, responsibilities and situations that do not always have clear answers.

Critical thinking, complex problem-solving, clear communication, collaboration, consideration of different perspectives, managing uncertainty and responsible decision-making develop alongside academic learning.

Social, environmental, cultural, scientific, technological and ethical questions increasingly become part of students’ reflections.

By the time they complete their education at Aubrick, students take with them academic knowledge and competencies that help them understand the complexity of the world, make thoughtful choices and participate actively in society.
